Today we will be talking about why 3-D renderings are so beneficial.
If you read our blog post, Your Experience, Our Design Process, you know how important 3-D conceptual images, often called renderings, of the project are to our design process. As trained designers, we are accustomed to visualizing spaces that do not exist yet. For some of our clients however, it is hard for them to translate a floor plan into a space as you or I would see it. It is our job to bridge the gap between concept and reality which is why renderings are so useful. In this post, we will talk about why we use renderings and why they are beneficial to our services at Leiht Design.
Typically, 2-D drawings are used to show technical information about the project. These drawings include floor plans, elevations, and sections of the project that indicate the dimensions, window and door placements, and other construction information. Then, the drawings are compiled into a set of construction documents that are used by the contractor or builder in order to build the space that was designed for the client. Decorative and final elements might be annotated in specific drawings, but are not emphasized and give little 3-D context within these drawings. Renderings, on the other hand, allow the client to see the space from a human perspective before it is even built.
Overall, 3-D renderings are used to highlight different aspects of a project. However, rendering styles can vary greatly between designers, software, and level of detail. At Leiht Design, we show our clients two different styles of renderings. One rendering mimics a sketch and does not show a great amount of detail. This initial rendering is used to introduce the client to their new space. Once the client is acquainted and gives us feedback, the next style of renderings are photo-realistic. These renderings show a much higher level of detail and quality. The images below are examples of how a 2-D drawing translates into a 3-D rendering shown in our two rendering styles:
As you can see, 3-D images are a crucial design tool that allows us to translate flat construction documents into easily understood images of a space. They also make the dialogue between us and our clients more clear, focused, and efficient. Clients always tell us how helpful it is to see their space transformed from a floor plan into an image that feels tangible. They feel more confident and comfortable knowing that they can visualize and understand the design before it is built.
