Happy Friday everyone!
Welcome to our design blog.
Today, we are introducing a new blog series called Quick Tips. This series will comprise of blog entries with simple suggestions for styling and designing your home. To kick off the series, we will be sharing some tips for selecting and styling area rugs.
1: Take into account size and scale.
Selecting a rug that is the wrong size is a common mistake. You want to pick a rug that is not only the right size for the room, but also fits with the furniture in that room, too. For example, make sure all seating furniture has at least the front two legs on the area rug. This way, the area rug is working to anchor the furniture grouping in the space and frame the seating area. A typical living room needs an 8' x 10' rug size. A 5' x 7' rug size can work with smaller furniture groupings.

2. In the bedroom, make sure the rug is proportional to the size of the bed.
As a rule of thumb, choose a rug size that allows around 1' of space on each side of the bed. An 8' x 10' rug, for example, would allow about 18" on either side of the bed. For a king bed, select a 9' x 12' rug. This helps to anchor the bed within the room, and gives you space to stand on the rug when you get out of the bed.

3. Layer it up!
We are loving the popular trend of layering area rugs. Find an inexpensive indoor/outdoor that is one size larger and neutral in color to lay under your primary rug. This look gives an eclectic, but clean flare to the space adding texture and dimension. It can also allow you to get by with a smaller primary rug since you will be able to place your seating on the secondary rug.
